Note from Kyoko Kawashima: "Young girl spinning silk or cotton. The girl is sitting on a wooden verandah which would be separated from the garden and street by a wooden door. Behind her is a house wall made of pieces of rice paper pasted on a bamboo frame. Its condition--patches and holes--indicate poverty. It is probably a farmer's house. See note re hair style photo 2."
