A typed report written by an unknown author that provides a historic overview of the land upon which the University of Waterloo was built. The report primarily documents colonial settlement by tracing legal records related to the land starting with a land grant given by the Crown for an area on the Grand River in 1798 through to the University’s purchase of land from Major Holdings in 1959. Significantly, the report does indicate that the Mohawk Nation laid claim to the land prior to the eighteenth century. The report contains a further reference to Joseph Brant, referred to as Chief Warrior of the Mohawk and Five Nations, as grantor of a quitclaim deed for 13,430 acres of land in 1803. In addition to the listing of legal records, the report provides a brief account of the current use and function of the two farmhouses left standing on the University’s campus: Brubacher House and the Schweitzer house (Graduate House). The author seems to have prepared this overview to justify or request the placement of a plaque outside the Schweitzer house commemorating the history of the land and/or farmhouses on site.
